Hugh Mackay, Cello & Junyan Chen, Piano

Scottish cellist Hugh Mackay is an exciting, versatile young artist whose musical life is denoted by an eclectic range of performing styles, repertoire, and collaborations. He has performed in many leading venues in the UK and abroad, including the Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Konzerthaus Dortmund, and the Palace of Versailles.
In 2022, Hugh was awarded the Suggia Gift from Help Musicians UK, a biennial prize given to an outstanding young cellist in the UK. As a scholarship holder with the Mozart Gesellschaft Dortmund, Hugh made his professional concerto debut with the Bremer Philharmoniker under the direction of their chief conductor Marko Letonja, with highly acclaimed performances in Die Glocke Bremen and the Konzerthaus Dortmund in 2021. An avid chamber musician, Hugh collaborated with leading violist Lawrence Power as a member of Collegium for his Wigmore Hall Residency and at the West Wycombe Chamber Music Festival.
Future projects include performing Mozart’s Divertimento for String Trio on historical instruments at the Royal Academy of Music with Charlotte Spruit and Edgar Francis, and a recital tour of Scotland in February-March 2024 with pianist Junyan Chen.
