MANCHESTER MID-DAY CONCERTS SOCIETY
2007/2008 season at the Bridgewater Hall
This season we welcome Paul Hindmarsh to the Manchester Mid-day Concerts Society as our new Director of Concerts.
For over twenty years Paul worked for BBC Radio 3 Manchester as a Producer of classical, choral and brass music.
He now has a wide ranging career as a freelance music producer, editor of the brass and wind band series for Faber
Music Ltd., editor of Brass Band World magazine and lecturer at the RNCM. He is sure to bring exciting new ideas
to our programming as well as carrying on the Society’s tradition of nurturing emerging talent. We wish him well
in his new role with the Society.
The 2007/2008 season of twenty-two concerts opens on Friday 28 September 2007 at 1.10pm with The Carducci String
Quartet - the first of eight concerts to be given by successful candidates from the Society’s annual auditions.
Four concerts will be presented in co-promotion with BBC Radio 3 featuring artists selected for the BBC New Generation
Artists Scheme. Once again we shall host two Young Concert Artists’ Trust Presentation Concerts and to complete the
series the Society will present a further eight recitals featuring a mix of locally known artists as well as those
from further afield.
The Manchester Mid-day Concerts Society began in 1917 as part of the ‘Music in Wartime’ scheme and since then has
run an unbroken series of lunchtime chamber music concerts from a variety of Manchester venues. It is now one of the
largest and most successful lunchtime series in the country. However, public funding and business sponsorship have reduced
dramatically over the years, and the survival of the Society now depends almost entirely on private funding and
individual giving.
