Shostakovich Cello Sonata Op.40
Piazzolla Le Grand Tango

The Russian brother and sister duo Mikhail Nemtsov and Elena Nemstova are no strangers to Manchester audiences. Mikhail was a student at Chethams School of Music before moving on to the RNCM. Elena joined her younger brother in 2009 and is a graduate of the Masters and the prestigious International Diploma in Chamber Music courses. The fourth and fifth of Beethoven's pioneering cello sonatas belong to his 'late period' and are among his most novel inspirations in terms of their concise form. Shostakovich's incisive Cello Sonata, dating from 1934, is the first chamber work he allowed to be published. Both works were staples of the repertoire of Mtislav Rostropovich, for whom Astor Piazzolla composed Le Grand Tango in 1990.
