Haydn Quartet Op.76 No.2 'Fifths'
Brahms Quartet Op.51 No.1 in C minor

The four young members of the Finzi Quartet impressed at their Manchester Mid-day audition with their confident and beautifully balanced approach to the classical style. They demonstrate that assurance for us in one of the greatest of  'Papa' Haydn's many string quartets. The 'Fifths' quartet, so called because of the falling theme around which the first movement is built, is a rare example of a Haydn quartet in the minor key. The quartets of Haydn's pupil Beethoven cast such long shadows into the 19th century that Brahms is said to have composed (and destroyed) some 20 quartets before he completed his C minor quartet, the first of the three that he thought worthy of publication.
